Daily Reading: Matt 11:28-30
Good night of discussion at roots last night as we broke down some of the readings we've had recently.
The key to understanding today's reading is understanding what a yoke is. While a yoke is something that you would put on oxen to steer them, when it came to a rabbi, the yoke had a whole different meaning.
The yoke was their belief system, their understanding of how to live out the scriptures. For example, different rabbi's had different ways to live out "remember the sabbath and keep it holy." Some Rabbi's said you couldn't do anything that day, others interpreted it to mean you could walk a certain distance but do no work. The full interpretation of ALL scripture and how to live that out was that Rabbi's yoke.
Jesus the Rabbi comes along and says his yoke is easy and light. When we understand and live out scripture the way Christ knew it should be lived out that it would not be difficult - it would actually be the best way to live! He even says our souls will find rest by living this way.
It is not about a bunch of man made rules, or preferences, but simply learning to live out our love God and love others.
There is no better way to live. God's way is always the best way.
courage my friends!
