Day 6: Monday, February 11, 2008

Daily Reading: Matthew 4:1-11

This week we'll take a closer look at temptation. Today, we see the temptation of Christ.

During my reading this morning, i was reminded that yesterday Pastor Barry talked about the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and pride of life - the 3 tactics of our enemy. No surprise then, that the same tactics he uses against us are the exact same tactics he uses against Christ here in Matthew 4.

Jesus was led by the Spirit to be tempted. God knew this time of testing was coming, and even led him into it. Does God test us the same way?

Jesus was attacked when he was alone, tired hungry... vulnerable. This is another key tactic of the enemy - he loves isolated targets.

The attacks came in Jesus area of strength. Could he have made a stone into bread? Absolutely. His motive however would have been wrong, which would have been sin. We can do the right thing for the wrong reasons or at the wrong time and they are still sinful.

Example - if I try to withdraw my paycheck a day early the bank calls that robbery. I've already worked for that money, its going to be deposited, but its not mine yet. Timing is everything. If I serve the homeless to receive the respect of other people, my motives are wrong and 1 Corinthians 13 says my actions are worthless.

May we continually learn what it is to love God with our heart, soul, mind & strength and love others as ourselves!

courage,
-davey
