Day 31

Daily Reading: Matthew 8:5-13

Imagine this Centurion, an officer in Roman Army in an occupied city. Romans, being the Empire of the time, considered themselves above Jews. They were more enlightened, stronger and better in every aspect. This specific Roman had 100 soldiers at his command.

What would cause this Centurion to stop a Jewish Rabbi and plead with him and even call him "LORD"?

Imagine how this soldier had to swallow his pride. Surely there were some of his soldiers watching, and word of his humiliation would spread throughout the entire city. What would cause him to humble himself in this way? Why was his belief so great? What made him so sure?

This Centurion must have been an eye-witness to some of the miracles of Jesus Christ. Watching Jesus heal the leper, give the blind sight, make the lame to walk or even raise the dead was not something a soldier would see every day.

Yet something was different about this Centurion. Many Jews saw the miracles of Christ every day, and still doubted he was the Son of God. This Roman saw the miracle and believed.

Which one are you? Are you like the Jews who always wanted more signs and more miracles and still did not believe? Or are you more like the Centurion, who believed because he saw? His belief was so strong he was willing to humble himself and look like a fool to other soldiers... because he believed Jesus was the Son of God.

Which one are you?

courage.
